Ferro Backup System installation under Linux and Mac OS X

The article discusses how to install and run Ferro Backup System in Linux, BSD and Mac OS X using a Wine environment

Introduction

Ferro Backup System requires a WinAPI programmer's interface to run. WinAPI is a set of libraries enabling the application to load, launch and interract with the operating system and other programs. This Interface is not available by default in Unix-like systems. To enable Win32 to launch in systems other than Windows, install an adequate WinAPI implementation for a given operating system.

Wine is an implementation of a WinAPI programmer's interface including a loader and libraries required to run Windows on Linux and other operating systems compatible with POSIX.

See below for steps necessary to run FBS Server and FBS Worker in Linux, BSD and Mac OS X.

1. Wine environment installation

The installation consists in downloading the appropriate installation package for a given operating system (deb, rpm, etc...) Wine and installation as per the instructions described on the project's website: www.winehq.org/download/

2. Ferro Backup System installation

Ferro Backup System installer runs under Windows and U*IX/Wine. The installation process is the same in both cases and is described on page Installing backup software

3. Internet Explorer installation (optional)

FBS Server uses Internet Explorer components to display reports and to support Local Command scripts. If the installation is meant for a backup server and you want to be able to use the FBS Server components listed, you need to install Internet Explorer 6 as well. IE6 can be installed manually or using Winetricks, a Wine component.
  • To install IE6 manually, you need to download and run the installer: Download Internet Explorer 6 SP 1
  • To install IE6 using Winetricks, launch the terminal and enter the following command:
sh winetricks ie6

System services operation (advanced)

Wine launches system services only after a user logs in to the system and launches any WinAPI application. Once all applications running under Wine have been closed, services are also stopped. To prevent system services from being stopped on closing all applications using Wine, launch the application managing Windows system services with a p parameter (persistent):
wineserver -p

If you want FBS Worker and FBS Server services to be launched automatically on Linux/Mac OS X startup, even without a graphic environment running, configure the system as per the instructions provided on page: Ubuntu Documentation - WineServer

Known limitations

List of functionalities not available in Linux and Mac:
